Pens up 2-0 in the drivers seat

The penguins won game 2 today by a final score of 2-0 to take a 2 games to none lead in the best of 7 series. A good game where both teams had there chances, but both goalies played great. The penguins seemed to have the advantage in the 1st period mainly because they had 2 power plays where they dominated but could not score. The 2nd period was back and fourth until Jordan Staal broke the scoreless tie at 13:55 of the 2nd period after Evgeni Malkin made a great play to set him up.

Thats how the 2nd period ended. Then in the 3rd with just over 6 minutes left Petr Sykora went to the box for hi-sticking. The pens were able to kill it but then with just over two minutes left Hal Gill went to the box for cross checking. This was the Rangers chance to tie it but they were unable to. Fleury came up big and the penalty killing was good as well. With 17 seconds left with the goaltender pulled Adam Hall shot the puck down the ice and all the Rangers could do was watch it roll into the net and the game was over.

Penguins whiteout the rangers in game one

After falling behind 3-0 the penguins made one of their greatest comebacks in franchise history. Jarkko Ruutu scored his 2nd goal of the playoffs in the 2nd period. Goal was assisted by Staal and Orpik at 8:13.

With score 3-1 Dupuis was able to put one past Lundquist shortly after. It was his 1st goal of the playoffs. Goal was assisted by Crosby at 8:27.

The penguins then tied it early in the 3rd when Marian Hossa got his 2nd of the playoffs. This goal was assisted by Scuderi and Malone at 4:40.

Twenty seconds later the penguins took their first lead and made it 4-3 as Petr Sykora put home his 4th goal of the playoffs. Goal was assisted by Malkin and Malone at 5:00.

After the Rangers then tied the game at on a goal by Scott Gomez. Then late in the 3rd former penguin Martin Straka went to the box and penguins took advantage and scored the game winning goal. Crosby shot it and Malkin deflected it in for his 2nd goal of the post season. Goal was assisted by Crosby and Whitney at 18:19.

What a game this will go down as one of the great games in penguins history lets hope we can use this moment going into game 2 and the rest of the season.

Sweep!! Pens win 3-1 move on to next round

Malkin started the scoring for the pens with his 2ND goal of the playoffs at 1:40 of the 2ND period assisted by Crosby and Gonchar to make it 1-0 pens.

Later in the 2ND period the senators got a goal from Cory Stillman at 10:31 assisted by Redden and Volchenkov. With the score tied at 1 the pens got a goal from an unlikely source as Jarkko Ruutu scored a highlight goal by spinning as he was on a partial breakaway. Tyler Kennedy got the assist at 15:28.

Then with Ottawa attacking hard Fleury was able to make some great saves down the stretch which lead to an empty net goal by Sidney Crosby to make it 3-1. His second goal of the playoffs came at 19:52 and was unassisted.

Here are my awards for round one of the playoffs

Penguins MVP:
The MVP has to be Marc-andre Fleury.

• He gave up a total of 5 goals in four games
• Fleury posted a goals against average of just 1.26
• He finished with a save percentage of .955

Penguins X-FACTOR:
Jarkko Ruutu was by far the most underrated player in this series.

• He drew a huge penalty late in game 2 which lead to Ryan Malone's game winning goal with just over a minute left
• He did not take one penalty during the entire series, something that he did a lot of in the regular season
• His amazing goal that he scored last night proved to be the game winner

Best Offensive Player:

Tie Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin

• Sidney Crosby leads all players in playoff scoring with 8 points (2 goals and 6 assists)
• Evgeni Malkin is tied for second with 7 points (2 goals and 5 assists)
• Both players shined at times

Best Defensive Player:

Everyone on defense has stepped but I think Rob Scuderi played the best.

• He was tied for second on the team with a +3
• He took only one penalty
• Scuderi just really did everything a defense men is supposed to do.
